Cooking with Apples: Tips & Inspiration

Apple Recipes FAQ

How to stew apples?

To stew apples, you must soften them in a saucepan of boiling water over a stove. Slice the apples up, place them in the water with caster sugar, and once the water has reached boiling point, leave for five minutes. Stir and boil for another two minutes, then your stewed apples should be ready to enjoy.

Are apple seeds poisonous?

The seeds of an apple do contain small amounts of cyanide, which, when over-consumed, is poisonous to humans. Whilst this is usually not enough to cause any harm, some experts advise staying away from apple seeds and removing the core of your apples before eating.

How to make apple sauce?

Following the same steps as you would to stew your apples, once cooled, remove the stewed apple mixture from the saucepan and place it into a food processor. Process the apples until they reach the correct consistency of apple sauce and then serve on the side of pork, glazed ham or a recipe of your choice.

Can I freeze stewed apples?

Yes. Stewed apples can be frozen and safely consumed within six months of being prepared. Make sure they are properly stored in a sealed container or bag before freezing.

How to stop apples from browning?

Washing and coating apples in lemon juice or similar citric acid can help prevent apples from browning over time. Alternative solutions include washing the apples in saltwater or honey water, or refrigerating them in an airtight container.

Are green apples more sour than red ones?

Many green apple varieties are more sour compared to their red counterparts, which often have a sweeter flavour. This is due to the higher amount of malic acid often found in green apples. Bear in mind, however, that flavour and sweetness can vary between apples regardless of colour.

What vitamins are in apples?

Apples are rich in a variety of vitamins, including vitamins A, B, C, E and K. These vitamins help promote cellular health, improve immune systems, create better bone health and offer a variety of other health benefits.

Can I eat apple skin?

Yes. While not everyone enjoys eating apple skins, they are safe to eat and contain a variety of nutrients and vitamins that are good for the body. Keep in mind that some apples may have been sprayed with pesticides, so you should take care to wash each apple first before consuming it.
