How to prepare Brussels sprouts
Similar to roasted meats like ham or turkey, Brussels sprouts are often associated with Christmas meals, but they’re an excellent addition to your diet all year round. Whether you’re prepping your Christmas dinner ahead of the big day or enjoying Brussels sprouts all throughout the year (as so you should!), here’s how to prep your sprouts to ensure perfect results.
- Trim and clean
- Chop off tough bottoms and stems, then remove any damaged outer leaves. Rinse well afterwards to ensure the Brussels sprouts are clean and free from bitterness. Scoring the bottom of your sprout with a sharp knife can help ensure that it cooks thoroughly while still retaining some bite. You may need to halve or quarter large sprouts to ensure even cooking.
- Season
- Toss with olive oil, as well as a dash of salt and pepper, which will help enhance the flavour and create a crispy, caramelised outer.
- Choose your cooking method
- Roast them for nutty, crispy sprouts. You can also sauté them for a smoky char. Alternatively, why not steam the sprouts for a softer, nutrient-preserving option? Read on for our favourite sprout cooking method – roasting.
