How to Store Leeks

Leeks are best kept in the fridge. They tend to take up a lot of space so we’d recommend cutting off the green leaves above the base of the leek before you store it, leaving only the white bulb and light green parts. These are usually too tough to eat so you won’t be needing them unless you plan on using them to enhance the flavours in soup. Leeks collect dirt between their layers so it’s important to rinse this away with running water. Once cleaned, pat dry before placing them in an airtight container or sealed bag near the bottom of your fridge. Due to their strong aroma, tightly wrap them to avoid affecting the other items in your fridge. They’ll stay fresh for 1-2 weeks this way.
Leeks can also be freezed and the method is just as simple. Wash thoroughly, remove upper leaves and the base, slice into rings and blanch in boiling water for two minutes. Dry thoroughly, and store in a freezer bag or airtight container. When frozen, leeks maintain their freshness for up to a year.
