Cooking Steps

Get prepped
1

• Boil the kettle.
• Cut potato into bite-sized chunks.
• Finely chop garlic.
• Thinly slice brown onion and spring onion.
• Cut slow-cooked pork belly into 2cm chunks.

Start the stew
2

• In a large saucepan, heat a drizzle of olive oil over
high heat.
• Cook onion until softened, 5-6 minutes.
• In the last minute, add garlic and Asian BBQ seasoning and cook until fragrant.

Finish the stew
3

• To the saucepan, add pork belly, the water (for the
stew), soy sauce, potato and kecap manis. Bring
to the boil.
• Reduce heat to medium. Simmer until slightly
thickened and potatoes are cooked through,
20-25 minutes.

Cook the jasmine rice
4

• While the stew is simmering, add the water (for the
rice) to a medium saucepan and bring to the boil.
• Add jasmine rice, stir, cover with a lid and reduce
heat to low.
• Cook for 10 minutes, then remove the pan from
heat and keep covered until rice is tender and all the
water is absorbed, 10 minutes.

TIP: The rice will finish cooking in its own steam so don’t
peek!

Steam the Asian greens
5

• When the rice has 5 minutes remaining, add Asian
greens and a splash of water to a microwave-safe
bowl, then cover with a damp paper towel.
• Microwave on high until just tender, 2-3 minutes.
• Drain any excess liquid, then season to taste with
salt and pepper.

Finish & serve
6

• Divide jasmine rice, steamed Asian greens and Singaporean-style braised pork belly stew between
bowls. Top with spring onion to serve. Enjoy!

Review summary

Updated on July 2026
  • Flavour: Most found the stew rich and authentic, though some felt it was mild and boosted it with extra seasoning or chilli flakes.
  • Ease of prep: Simple to follow with straightforward steps, making it a great weeknight one-pot meal.
  • Suggestions: Several reviewers recommend simmering well beyond the suggested 20–25 minutes to thicken the sauce and reduce the liquid. Using less water and adding extra kecap manis can also help concentrate the flavour.
  • Leftovers: Reviewers noted the dish is filling and hearty, making it well suited to generous serves.
  • Portions: Some felt the pork belly was quite fatty with limited meat; those who enjoyed it noted the ratio of meat to fat was good when pieces were even.
