Cooking Steps

Make the mash
1

• Boil the kettle. Half-fill a large saucepan with boiling
water, then add a generous pinch of salt.
• Peel potato and parsnip, then cut into small
chunks.
• Cook veggies, in the boiling water, over high heat,
until easily pierced with a fork, 15-20 minutes.
• Drain and return to saucepan.
• Add the butter and milk to the cooked veggies and
season with salt. Mash until smooth.

TIP: Save time and get more fibre by leaving the veggies
unpeeled.
Little cooks: Get those muscles working and help mash
the veggies!

Get prepped
2

• Meanwhile, finely chop carrot.
• Thinly slice onion (see ingredients).

Cook the filling
3

• In a large frying pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium-high heat. Cook carrot and onion, until tender, 4-5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl.
• Return large frying pan to high heat.
• Add beef mince (no need for oil!), breaking up with a spoon, until just browned, 3-4 minutes.
• In the last minute, add herb & mushroom seasoning and cook until fragrant.

Make it saucy
4

• Reduce heat to medium, then stir in red wine jus and the water. Cook until slightly reduced,  1-2 minutes.
• Remove pan from heat, then stir through cooked carrot and onion.

TIP: Add a splash of water if the filling looks dry.

Grill the pie
5

• Preheat the grill to high. Transfer beef filling into a baking dish and spread mashed veggies over the top. Drizzle with olive oil.
• Grill pie until lightly golden, 8-10 minutes.

TIP: Grills cook fast, so keep an eye on the pie!
Little cooks: Join in on the fun by smoothing the mash
mixture evenly over the pie!

Finish & serve
6

• Divide King’s Landing beef tavern pie between bowls to serve. Enjoy!

Review summary

Updated on July 2026
  • Flavour: The herb and mushroom seasoning with red wine jus creates a rich, comforting filling that reviewers enjoyed.
  • Suggestions: Adding cheese on top of the mash before grilling was recommended to improve the topping and add extra flavour.
  • Portions: Some found one potato insufficient for the mash topping, particularly if not using parsnip — consider adding an extra potato.
