What is freekeh?
Freekeh is an ancient whole grain made from young green wheat that’s harvested while still tender, then roasted over an open flame and cracked into smaller pieces. This traditional process gives freekeh its signature nutty, slightly smoky flavour.
Naturally high in fibre and protein, it’s a nutritious and filling alternative to grains like rice, couscous, or quinoa. Freekeh has been a staple in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean recipes for centuries and is now growing in popularity for its versatility and health benefits. Freekeh works beautifully in everything from fresh salads and hearty soups to comforting one-pot meals, making it a brilliant addition to any kitchen.
