Sustainability

Why do you use so much packaging?

HelloFresh uses specially designed packaging to ensure your food arrives fresh and safe every time. We are mindful of the amount of packaging used and reduce it where possible. We are continuously looking to optimise and innovate with quality and sustainability in mind.

What am I supposed to do with the packaging?

Cardboard box: your box, recipe cards, meal kit bags (including stickers) and any cans you receive with your meals are all recyclable

Cool Pouch: our cool pouches provide insulation to keep your dairy and meat cold and safe to eat.

We are always looking for more sustainable solutions to our packaging, which is why from time to time you may find a different type of cool pouch in your box. Find out what to do with yours below:

  • White Cool Pouches are made from plant based and renewable materials. You can reuse them to keep things cool or place them in your general waste.
  • Silver Cool Pouches are 100% Australian made. You can reuse them to keep things cool or whilst REDcycle has temporarily paused the in store recycling services you can place the packaging in your general waste.
  • Ice Packs: the ice packs are perfect for reuse in your esky or cooler bag. Otherwise, defrost the ice and empty the water onto your plants or down the sink and whilst REDcycle has temporarily paused the in store recycling services you can place the outer packaging in your general waste.
  • Plastic Wrappers: the plastic wrappers used for your meats, salads and herbs help to keep them fresh and hygienic. Whilst REDcycle has temporarily paused the in store recycling services you can place the packaging in your general waste.

What is a Climate Superstar recipe?

Each week, we are identifying the recipes on our menu that have the lowest carbon impact on the environment. We know our customers are looking to make everyday sustainable food choices; and now with the new Climate Superstar recipe tag, our customers will be informed of the recipes with the lowest carbon impact in their weekly menu, making conscious informed choices easy! Look out for the new ‘Climate Superstar’ recipe tags on the HelloFresh menu each week and add them to your box.

How much difference am I making by choosing a Climate Superstar recipe?

Looking to make environmentally-informed decisions about what you eat? At HelloFresh, due to our lean supply chain and reduced food waste, our meals create 15% fewer CO2 emissions than the same meals made from supermarket ingredients.

On top of this, our new Climate Superstar recipes have even lower emissions than regular HelloFresh meals; being 75% below the carbon budget threshold of an average Australian dinner. So by choosing Climate Superstar recipes, you are helping to reduce the global emissions through your own carbon footprint; supporting the fights against climate change.

How do you work out the emissions of your recipes and select the Climate Superstar recipes?

When comparing the environmental impact of recipes, we use the measure of “CO2 equivalent” (CO2e). This includes all the greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere during the production and processing of ingredients. This includes methane and nitrous oxide, not just CO2. CO2e is therefore a more accurate representation of the climate impact of a recipe than just a measure of CO2 emissions

HelloFresh has partnered with HowGood; the world’s largest database for product and ingredient sustainability. HowGood calculates the CO2e impact of the ingredients based on the individual amounts of ingredients.

Using HowGood Data sets, we calculate the emissions per serving, based on the individual amounts of ingredients for each HelloFresh recipe - including Agricultural Production and Food Processing emission data. From here, we then select the recipes that meet our requirements of being 75% below the carbon budget threshold of an average Australian dinner. These are our Climate Superstar recipes.

Why are we changing from plastic to paper cool pouch?

Our new paper cool pouch packaging is 100% recyclable! Our packaging is integral to helping us operate as a sustainable and environmentally conscious business. To achieve this, we're always on the lookout for new, innovative ideas to adapt our packaging and reduce the amount of plastic in your box and we work closely with our packaging suppliers to develop the best sustainable solutions.

Will the paper cool pouch still keep my items cold?

Yes! Our new paper cool pouch uses a textured kraft paper core for superior insulation and has an adhesive seal to keep your dairy, meat, sauces and condiments cold and safe to eat.

How do I dispose of the paper cool pouch?

Our new paper cool pouch packaging is 100% recyclable! Simply dispose of the paper cool pouch in your kerbside recycling bin, following your local council guidelines.

Why do we need to use a cool pouch at all?

Our top priority is the safety of our customers and the quality of the fresh food we deliver. By including a cool pouch in your box, we’re able to keep your food chilled in transit and ensure that the safety and hygiene of the ingredients are of an exceptionally high standard. With such a large amount of sensitive ingredients (including all of the meat and dairy!), the cool pouch is required to keep everything chilled, fresh and safe to consume.

When will I receive a paper cool pouch in my box?

We’re rolling out the new paper cool pouch packaging in gradual phases, starting from Thursday the 10th of August.

Why am I still receiving a plastic cool pouch?

We’re currently rolling out Medium and Large-sized paper cool pouches. You may typically receive a Small cool pouch in your deliveries, which will remain plastic for now due to operational challenges. We’re working on a solution that keeps your goodies chilled and fresh, and hope to launch a Small paper cool pouch soon.

What else is HelloFresh doing to progress our sustainability goals or improve packaging?

HelloFresh has joined the Science Based Targets initiative with our sights set on reducing emissions across the supply chain. We would do this by, for example, increasing the renewable energy used in our operations.

By sourcing many of our ingredients directly from local suppliers we remove steps from the traditional supply chain. This saves carbon emissions by cutting back on transport time and extra storage. In fact, our Life Cycle Analysis has shown that HelloFresh meals create 15% fewer carbon emissions than the same meals made from supermarket ingredients. If you’re looking for recipes with the lowest carbon emissions on our menu each week, keep an eye out for the “Climate Superstar” tag.

We are continuously innovating to find more sustainable options or to remove packaging altogether. The good news is that a lot of the packaging from your box (including the box itself!) can be recycled. Head on over to our packaging page to find out more.
