Most Popular Cuisines in Australia

Meat and three vegs is synonymous with Aussie dinner time, so it might not surprise anyone to know that ‘Australian’ was the most popular cuisine in 2021, contributing to 31% of total orders shipped by HelloFresh.

Australian cuisine is hearty and colourful, yet simple and homey. Foods like rissoles, pork sausages, and even chicken quinoa bowls, speak to the simple history of Australian foods and a growing sophistication of the Australian palate.

Aussies have also enjoyed more Asian meals into 2021, with an increase of 70% of Asian meals shipped to Aussie homes. And the demand for Mexican meals almost doubled in the same time.

Most Googled Cuisines In Australia

Leading into 2021, Aussies have increased the number of Mexican and Italian meals they’ve been cooking at home. This is reflected in a 50% increase in the search for Mexican and Italian recipes online over the past 12 months. In March 2021, Mexican and Italian recipes were searched 4,400 and 2,400 times respectively, compared to 2,400 and 1,600 searches the previous year.

Increase in low carb meals

A year spent at home had Aussies looking at their eating habits and their waistlines. One way they have started eating healthy is through low-carb meals. The number of low-carb meals ordered in the first quarter of 2021 more than doubled when compared to the same time last year. There were only 38,521 low-carb meals shipped in the first 3 months of 2020 compared to 293,121 low carb meals shipped during the same period in 2021.

HelloFresh’s new and improved Carb Smart recipe options have less than 30g of carbs, and include meals like Asian Chicken Schnitzel with Katsu Sauce & Japanese Slaw and Dukkah Beef Steak with Rainbow Veggie Fries & Garlic Yoghurt.

More Vegetarian Meals Shipped

The number of vegetarian meals ordered in February 2021 was double that of February 2020. Plus, our data shows steady growth in vegetarian meals ordered from HelloFresh during 2020. There was a slight drop in December 2020, which could be due to the lockdown ending and summer barbecues.

So far in 2021, we can see consistent growth in Vegetarian meals shipped. 885,064 shipped meals in Jan - Mar 2020 vs. 1,339,062 shipped meals in Jan- Mar 2021 were vegetarian.

Increased Interest in Vegetarian Meals

Aussies love their meat. Lamb on the BBQ, beef in our burgers, chicken in everything. However, there is now a rise in the number of people searching on Google for vegetarian meals and recipes. In March 2021, 50% more Australians searched for vegetarian dinner recipes than March 2020.

While Australians still love their meat and veg meals, the shift to tasty vegetarian meals, for health or just for some variety, is a trend we see growing into the future.

Top vegetarian cities in Australia

Melbourne ordered the most vegetarian meals in the first 3 months of 2021 when compared to the rest of Australia. 13.17% of all HelloFresh meals delivered to Melbournians were vegetarian. Canberra and Sydney were hot on their heels with 12.74% of meals being vegetarian. Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane consumed fewer vegetarian meals than their eastern/southern cousins.
