The Nations Favourite Cuisines

Aussies Enjoy Their Own Tasty Exports The Most

Australian food is the nation's top choice when it comes to cuisines, beating out a lot of competition from overseas. Tastebuds may be changing though, with Italian food jumping a rank to secure the second spot this year, compared to placing third in 2020. Along with Asian food, these cuisines are the biggest climbers and could replace traditional Aussie recipes in 2022.

Far Flung Tastes May Prompt New Preferences Next Year
Cuisines like Middle Eastern, Caribbean, and Thai all feature in the top 10. With significant demand, these exotic tastes may be contenders for the nation's cuisine of choice in 2022.

British Food Is The Least Shipped Cuisine For Aussies
Of all cuisines, HelloFresh shipped the fewest British recipes in 2021, putting them at risk of missing out on the top 10 next year.

Elsewhere, there's plenty of variation, from savouring Italian flavours in West Wimmera, to loving Asian spices in Walcha, Aussie food preferences stretch across the entire world.

Sweet Over Savoury For Aussies

In 2021, HelloFresh shipped almost twice as many appetizers as desserts, showing that savoury reigns supreme across the nation.

  • 425,478 appetiser orders.
  • 294,083 dessert orders.

Adding A New Appeal To Desserts In 2022
Despite these ordering habits, search behaviour is showing some interesting signs in favour of sweet treats - but they have a slight twist!

Searches for 'thai dessert' are up by 140%, and 'mango coco thai dessert' is currently a breakout term with a search increase of 5000%. Aussies may alter their preferences in 2022 based on this, taking inspiration from the stunning beachy nation!

What are experts saying

What recipes are you most excited about over the coming months?

I'm really excited about a few different recipes that we have coming up. Both of them are Custom recipes that allow customers to swap ingredients to suit their tastes and dietary preferences.

The first is our Seared Chicken & Bacon Roast Veggies with Creamy Pesto Dressing, which has the option to swap chicken for barramundi. This is part of our increased pescatarian offering, with an additional fish dish and prawn recipe each week.

The second is our Mexican Pulled Mushroom Tacos with Cherry Tomato Salsa & Smokey Aioli, which has the option to swap smokey aioli for vegan aioli, making the dish 100% plant-based. We're also expanding our plant-based offering with dishes like these that provide a simple substitution to a vegetarian recipe to make it plant-based.

These Custom recipes represent the lastest way that HelloFresh is innovating to change the way that people cook for the better. By providing more flexibility, the option for customisation opens up a new aspect of the HelloFresh menu, enabling us to better tailor it to our customers' exact needs.
