To shine a light on how a busy work life can impact diet, we surveyed over 1,000 Australians, who are currently employed, to get an insight into their daily eating habits. The results revealed 68% of respondents have to order takeaway food at some point during the week because they don’t have the time or supplies to cook a meal at home. Of those people, around 1 in 5 (19%) said they do this twice a week and around 1 in 6 (14%) said they do this three times a week.

What’s more, over half (54%) of working Australians say they have to eat out at a restaurant at some point in the week because they don’t have the time or supplies to cook at home.

Out of those who do manage to break themselves away from their work for dinnertime, the survey revealed that not many are sitting down to enjoy their meal until late at night. Most working Australians eat their evening meals between 6-7 pm, with 1 in 6 not sitting down until 8.30 pm. This is due to getting home late, taking time to decide what to have for dinner, and then cook it, as well as taking care of other responsibilities.

The data also revealed that individuals in administration roles (1 in 10) eat the latest, not sitting down until 10 pm or later with those in creative/design professions most likely to sit and eat their evening meal at 9 pm (1 in 7).

This reliance means there’s an even bigger pressure on working professionals across Australia to be able to fit in a nutritious weeknight dinner without the hassle.
